News

I have been rather casual on posting, how sad that I only have 6 post for all of 2008. It must seem I have nothing worth posting but really I have just been busy. Alot has happened this summer. I have almost completed painting my rooms and getting things arranged. I am trying to say I'm getting close to completeing my decorating exrtravaganza but will refrain because there is still so much to do. I will post pics since it is dettering me from rolling the ball on 'art' project. We will just say that my house is my creative outlet at this point. I also assumed a new job this summer which is somewhat out of my element (IT stuff) but I have been picking things up pretty quickly. It also made me feel good that the office I work in was willing to go on a limb and hire an art major who worked part time as student, kind of an unexpected promotion or maybe they were just desparate. Either way, boosted my ego.

Also I have decided to take the LSAT and try to get into law school. I guess I am just tierd of being poor and I like the idea of continuouly researching and learning involved in law. I am taking a prep course, which I just started Sept. 2. We took a diagnostic test and I didn't do so hot (141 eeeEEk). I am shooting for 156/157 which I now realize may not happen. I am a little discouraged about the whole situation but I suppose it will provide the drive I need to really tackle it. In the meantime, I will photograph my house and keep you posted on any other creative endeavors. Sorry no pics in this post (I pride myself on creating a picturesque blog b/c everyone loves pictures but today I got nothing...I will try to make up for that on my next post).

Decorating

I still haven't finished editing the photos of my work from last semester. You will have to excuse me, I have been working on painting and decorating my house. It is finally starting to look finished. I wanted to post some banners I made for my bedroom. They were just for fun but I am very pleased with the completed product. In case you aren't a fan of classic movie stars (you should start) the portraits are Sophia Loren and Cary Grant.

This was the first attempt but I was not happy with the gold, it seemed to reflective and not solid enough to really make an impact.

This is what will hang after I decide on how to mount and frame them. I was quite surprised with the outcome and the project wasn't all that difficult, although I did get eaten by mosquitoes during the process! (It's all about art!)

Maserati

This is work from my screen printing class-Spring of 2008:

This work was inspired by the Joe Walsh Song "Life's Been good." This is printed canvas that has been streched on to a frame. The orangish/red cars have been cut out, stuffed with poly-fil and stiched to create a crafty and feminine quality. It represent the line 'My Maserati does 185, I lost my license now I don't drive..." Not only is the dichotomy of male and female play a significant role in my work I am also influenced by the past. In my screenprinting you will see that music from the past serves as a point of reference in my work mostly because the car culture becomes part of the music. Not only a personal connection and comment on male vs. female but also a tribute to Joe Walsh!

Awhile

It has been awhile since my last post and alot has gone on. The big thing is I GRADUATED with my BFA!!! Now what? Looking for jobs, no fun. I have also acquired a new camera so here is some of my work. I will attempt to keep it in chronological order as it is easier to see where I am headed but the dates become blurred since I was working on several things at once.

These are separate pieces which make up a 'his and hers' set. I have grown up with these cars. The 1967 nova SS 283 small block chevy is my mothers and has 88k original miles as her grandfather purchased this car new off the show room floor. The 1967 chevelle SS with original 396 big block chevy is my fathers and needs to be restored but I still love to drive that car and turn heads. As you will see with my work I am influenced by objects defined as masculine or feminine. I often super-impose and and combine male and female images and themes within my work.

Hoplessly Waiting

Much to my dismay I am currently without a digital camera. The absence of such technology makes it difficult to proceed with my original thesis: documenting and comparing my work and the past. In the meantime, I have decided to continue daydreaming; the following our pieces that make-up my ideal living area.

First it begins with a couch:

Passed Aquaintance

Today was a bit somber. It was the day after a week long break; spring break. After rounding out a brief vacation from routine it's back to the mundane. While I didn't take any fancy vacation, in fact I didn't even get to have a week free from worry or deadlines, just didn't have to deal with schedules or dates.

I spent most of my week working on my capstone project which involved piles of mohair and sewing machines. Washing, and sewing mohair really makes me want to move to Ireland, buy a green pasture and herd sheep. I would love to spin and dye my own yarn, as I gaze into my beautiful green pasture. I deviate. I guess today is not only somber but a day for dreaming.

On the topic of dreaming I also encountered an acquaintance from the past. Saturday night I was relaxing on the couch watching 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960). I had never seen the movie before and could only identify Yul Brenner and James Cobourn. As I'm not a huge fan of Westerns I was watching casually when one of the characters grabbed my attention. Vin; the quiet, ultra suave, cowboy leading opposite the hard assed, oddly foreign cowboy; Yul Brenner. This light haired, roughed cowboy was indeed Steve McQueen. It is sad that I could not identify him at first glance, but in my own defense I was born in 1985. After I noticed this cowboy I watched the movie avidly as I felt some connection to McQueen. While I didn't know him by name I could recognize him as if he were someone close to me. Perhaps we were good friends in a time before or perhaps I just met him as a passerby. Oh Steve McQueen who am I? I do own a pair of mustard colored campus frye boots? Could we be meant for one another?

Awakening

This is the beginning of the end: the end of being a student and perhaps the end of my youth. I am spending my last spring break at work and decided it was time to start a blog. This blog will be a look into the past; something I hold quite dear. Regardless of the technology and neat advancements that become avaliable I continue to dwell on elements of the past. I feel as though I am just an old soul floating through a millineum in which I don't belong. I will dedicate this blog to the past and publish my relics; things that not only define the past but things that define me. I will showcase my artwork beside the objects which serve as inspiration, a comparison of how I am affected by objects that came before. As I approach graduation and revel in my acheiement of attaining my BFA I can only look forward to the future even if my soul resides in the past.
